A Serendipitous Evening - Playing with Wynton Marsalis

On a late stormy and wet evening on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, I received a call from my friend jazz guitarist Milo Petersen that he was enroute to picking up jazz legend trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and friend John Roche up at the hotel to bring them to a jazz jam session gig at the Owl and Thistle in downtown Seattle.  I am a believer that occurrences happen for a reason.  Unexpected occurrences always presents themselves as doorways to opportunities provided one chooses to walk through the door to get there.  This was such a door.  With no hesitation I packed up my upright bass and headed into the monsoon that was Seattle that night.  Upon arrival at this Irish Pub, Milo, Wynton, and John were already seated at the bar.  After I got carded, which is kind of funny since I just turned 48 last week, I proceeded to where my associates were enjoying their libations.  With my big upright bass inside my gig bag strapped upon my shoulder I meandered between bar stools and arrived at the spot of the center of the Universe for all my intents and purposes.  I was to meet Wynton Marsalis and possibly--play with the living legend no less!  Noticeably, Wynton did not have his trumpet with him at the bar.  Upon arrival I did notice his eyes upon me and his head seemed to pop up.  I brought my acoustic bass and it towered over me like a full sized stuffed bear riding upon my back.  Wynton noticed.  The house band hosting the session had some of Seattle's finest jazz musicians in the house.  Pianist Eric Verlinde, drummer Jose Martinez, bassist Chris Symer, and a really good tenor saxophonist whom I did not know and can't recall his name but heard he had arrived in Seattle only a year or so ago.  Symer was playing his electric bass that night.  Apparently, Wynton is not a fan of electric bass in jazz music, or perhaps in general.  John informed me that he had no desire to sit in with the electric version of the bass.  So, when I appeared it was my acoustic bass that drew his attention.  He decided that he would play with the addition of the acoustic bass in the mix.  He left his seat and went out with Milo to retrieve his horn from the car.

While they were out getting the trumpet I managed to down a couple IPAs, which got me settled and relaxed.  When Wynton returned with his horn after a while, he passed me by and extended his hand out to me where I grabbed it and shook it.  I said "very nice to meet you, Mr. Marsalis."  He sat back down at his stool in the bar and sipped on his drink.  Shortly, he took his horn out and casually sauntered to the stage to let the band know his intention to sit in.  I could not hear the words but I could see some of the body language and Symer nod and utter "no problem, of course."  Symer took his electric bass off and proceeded to take out his upright bass that was still dressed in its gig bag in the corner behind the stage.  Chris is one of Seattle's great bassists and fortunately prepared as he had his upright bass.  Milo who had brought his guitar in joined the rest of the band as Wynton started to play Sweet Georgia Brown by himself.  The rest of the band followed and Wynton Marsalis started his mini concert for the lucky several that were present that night.

After a few songs later John went up to Wynton to remind him that I was in the room and wanted to bring me up.  I went to undress my bass from the gig bag and after tuning up (I just put on brand new strings that very day so it was really out) I came up the front side of the stage where Milo put a microphone close to my instrument and I joined in trading bass solos with Symer on a blues tune.  After several choruses another bassist was in the room and approached me.  I yielded to him to take over my bass.  Turns out he was Ben Williams who is a part of the Pat Metheny Group that just did a concert at the Moore Theatre.  He is a great bassist!  He soloed on several blues choruses and just tore it up.  Wow!  Another monster musician just chilling after his concert and sitting in with Wynton Marsalis no less!

I did get a chance to play a tune or two with Mr. Marsalis.  The picture above is evidence of that.  It was an unexpected night and an unexpected treat and thrill to share the stage with one of the planet's best musicians and brilliant trumpet players.

Big thanks goes to Milo Petersen who called me at almost 10pm to alert me to what turned out to be a very serendipitous evening.  Thanks to Eric, Chris, and Jose for letting me sit in and partake in this very cool experience.  Thanks to John Roche, my dear friend who is a trumpeter and an in-room dining manager at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel where I play every Friday and Saturday nights in The Georgian.  He is a New Orleans native and childhood friend of Wynton, Branford, and the Marsalis family.  John is the connection to Wynton for whom his appearance was made possible on this rainy Tuesday night at the Owl and Thistle.

Jazz in The Georgian, March 7, 2014

On Friday, March 7, 2014 we had the introduction of fabulous accordion player Hugh Sutton make his first appearance in The Georgian at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel in the heart of downtown Seattle.  I met Hugh at a jam session party just after the New Year in early January.  Hugh's dexterous accordion playing stood out in a room that had many fine musicians that evening.  We exchanged numbers and a few weeks later connected.  A discussion of many songs we knew in common revealed that we could work together.

We had a sparse crowd this night in The Georgian.  But those who were present heartily voiced their approval as well as the restaurant wait staff who have heard all of the stellar jazz players that visit this extraordinary fine dining room on a regular basis.  Hugh again stood out as well in The Georgian.

Hugh is a native Seattleite.  He went to Summit K-12 school and attended Cornish College of the Arts 1986-1989 as a pianist.  Hugh performs regularly several times a week in Seattle.

Here are a couple highlights from our gig.

This is a fine Antonio Carlos Jobim song called How Insensitive:

This is a cool version of Wayne Shorter's Footprints:

It was a treat to have the the sound of the accordion in The Georgian especially expressed with the fine skill and musicianship that Hugh brings.  We will be looking forward to more of Hugh Sutton as I am confident the dining guests of The Georgian will be finding out.

Live in The Georgian, New Year's Eve 2013

On December 31, 2013 we marked the end of the year with a grand send off in style at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel in The Georgian.  This was the eleventh consecutive New Year's Eve that my bands have played at the Olympic Hotel since 2002.  This goes back to before The Fairmont took over the property in 2003 when we played for the last New Year's Eve celebration as a Four Seasons Hotel.  In 2004 there was a break as The Fairmont transitioned from the former ownership its first year. Since 2005 we have played for the Gala Dinner in The Georgian and have brought in the New Year ever since.

By popular demand the celebration has expanded to open up for two dinner seatings.  There is an early first seating from 5pm-8pm, and the Gala Dinner from 9pm-1am.  For the first seating we had my jazz trio entertain the dinner guests.  I had two highly outstanding musicians with me.  John Hansen who is a regular guest artist for Jazz in The Georgian played the Kurzweil piano. Woodwinds and tenor saxophonist Tony Rondolone played the flute for much of this set.

The first seating brought couples and families with children who could celebrate a nice early dinner and go home in time to ring in the New Year at midnight.  The guests were attentive and appreciative of the music. It was a pleasure and delight to play for all the nice folks and a wonderful way to start the night.

Here is a video of a song that I feel captured the essence of the evening.  This is a beautiful standard called Polka Dots and Moonbeams.

Polka Dot and Moonbeams

The Gala Dinner Event closed out the year with an elegant supper that featured dancing throughout the evening.  The jazz trio became a quintet.  In addition to Tony, John, and myself, vocalist extraordinaire Kelly Eisenhour and superb drummer Brian Kirk joined us for the main event.  We started off the dinner sets with classy well known standards from the Great American Songbook.  Folks loved to dance to the romantic ballads.  As the midnight hour approached we stepped up the intensity and launched into classic rock and pop from the 60's, 70's, and 80's.  The champagne was poured for all the guests and the countdown to 2014 ensued.  With the stroke of midnight the band struck up Auld Lang Syne and the balloons tied high in the ceiling came raining down along with the cacophony of party favors and horns from the happy revelers. The guests kept dancing right up to the very end of the set a full hour after midnight.

It was a great evening of celebration and fun, and a wonderful way to end the year.  In 2013 we had many great performances with the many musical guests throughout the whole year for Jazz in The Georgian.  I'm looking forward to more terrific playing with many of Seattle's finest jazz instrumentalists every Friday and Saturday nights.  Happy New Year!

Jazz in The Georgian, August 23, 2013

Super saxman Alexey Nikolaev was back at The Georgian, the Four-Diamond restaurant inside The Fairmont Olympic Hotel on Friday, August 23, 2013.  As usual we had a terrific time playing many great tunes and songs from the Great American Songbook.  Alexey was in prime form as always.  Playing the saxophone in The Georgian is a challenging prospect.  The nature of this gig is that it is quiet.  This is a very fine dining establishment and it is incumbent upon us, the band, to perform at a level of ambient volume that does not overshadow the phenomenal culinary experience of this great restaurant.  Alexey has extraordinary facility and chops who is known for his powerful tenor sax playing.  It is remarkable to hear him play at a pianissimo level and still retain the intensity and speed of his playing.  This is a very difficult thing to do.  Alexey is no ordinary talent.  He pulls it off effortlessly.

Here are some moments we captured on video.

Autumn Leaves

This is a nice tune called Whisper Not by Benny Golson.
Whisper Not

This song exemplifies exactly what I said about Alexey's marvelous facility and ability to perform quietly yet retain his fluidity, speed, and intensity over his instrument.  This song is a good old standard called Just One Of Those Things.  Alexey just burns on this tune yet is quiet enough that you can hear the clicking of the sax keys from his fingers.  This is great stuff.
Just One Of Those Things

Alexey Nikolaev will be back for Jazz in The Georgian on Friday, September 13, 6pm-10pm.
Don't miss out!

Jazz in The Georgian, August 10, 2013

The incomparable jazz harmonicist Jay Mabin was back again at The Georgian Restaurant inside The Fairmont Olympic Hotel in the heart of downtown Seattle.  For over three years Jay has been a regular guest artist with whom I have had the privilege to play.  He is a rare harmonica player who can not only play traditional blues music that the harmonica is so associated with, but can play difficult complex melodies as well as improvise over challenging jazz harmony.  Playing over jazz chord changes is really where Jay separates himself with other harmonica players.  According to the great Seattle jazz vocalist Greta Matassa, she told me recently that Jay is really a unique harp player.  Some years ago she was recording an album and she wanted Jay to be on it.  He was unavailable at the time for the session.  She did a search for qualified jazz harmonica players around the country, but she was not able to locate someone who could substitute for Jay.  True jazz harp players are not abundant.  We're fortunate that we have Jay to represent the Pacific Northwest region as our truly outstanding jazz harmonicist.

We had another fun night of playing.  Here are a few videos of some of the highlights.

This first video is a Chick Corea song called 500 Miles High.  It's a really fun jazz fusion type song.  We play it kind of funky.

500 Miles High

This next video is of a great standard by the late jazz legend and pioneer Louis Armstrong called What A Wonderful World.

What A Wonderful World

This last video is a song that he played at the end of the night.  We made this one up on the spot.  It's called Shuffle In F Thang.  This is just some down home blues.

Shuffle In F Thang

Jay Mabin will be back again for Jazz in The Georgian on Saturday, September 14.  Hope to see you!

Jazz in The Georgian, August 9, 2013

On Friday, August 9, 2013 the remarkable and highly accomplished guitarist Frank Seeberger was back again at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel for Jazz in The Georgian.  Frank had just purchased a brand new guitar and got a chance to break it in for some very fun playing of jazz tunes and standards.  I have been playing my Ibanez fretless electric bass with Frank for the past several times.  His sound and versatility allows my fretless to blend in with him in a variety of styles that range from straight ahead jazz, fusion, and funk.

We had a great night of playing.  There were lots of excellent takes from the evening.  Here are some of the video highlights.

This first video is an old standard called On Green Dolphin Street that we played by request.

On Green Dolphin Street

This next video is a wonderful bossa nova tune by Antonio-Carlos Jobim called How Insensitive.

How Insensitive

This is a song that I never get tired of playing.  As a result it's been a tune that I've featured many times called Beatrice.

Beatrice

This last song is tune we kind of made up on the spot.  One may not think to hear this type of song played in the fine dining establishment that The Georgian is.  This one is called "Shuffle In G".  This was a lot of fun.  I dare you not to move to this.

Jazz in The Georgian, August 3, 2013

This past Saturday, on August 3, 2013, my friend and terrific hard bop jazz pianist John Hansen was back for Jazz in The Georgian at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel.  As usual John brought his hard swinging phrasing and no-nonsense straight ahead jazz playing for another fun evening at this esteemed four-star restaurant in the heart of downtown Seattle.  It was an especially busy night that featured an unusual two-for-one dinner promotion over the weekend.  Such promotions occur only on the weekdays and exclude the weekends, but this was an exception.  The night before on Friday, there were so many guests dining and the collective din of conversational volume, that I could barely hear myself play my un-amplified bass with pianist Randy Halberstadt.  Tonight wasn't quite as busy as Friday, but the room still hummed with several dozens of patrons as the Georgian staff were put through their tough task of maintaining the high exceptional service that is trademark for this distinguished hotel restaurant.

John and I had a good time as usual playing lots of great tunes and standards.  We got a couple good takes from the evening.  The first video is a standard called The Song Is You by Jerome Kern.

The Song Is You

In this video we're playing a long time old standard by Ray Noble called Cherokee.

John Hansen will be back for more outstanding piano jazz playing at Jazz in The Georgian on Saturday, August 24.  Catch some remarkable jazz performance at the unique fine dining experience at The Georgian restaurant inside The Fairmont Olympic Hotel.
